Candle Safety & Care

A candle brings warmth and atmosphere into a room, but every candle is an open flame and must be treated with care.

Always read and follow the safety information supplied with your candle.

Before lighting

  • Remove all packaging before use.
  • Trim the wick to approximately 5 mm before each burn.
  • Place the candle upright on a stable, level and heat-resistant surface.
  • Keep the candle away from draughts, radiators, fans and open windows.
  • Keep the candle away from curtains, paper, decorations and anything else that could catch fire.
  • Keep burning candles out of the reach of children and pets.
  • Keep a suitable distance between burning candles. A distance of at least 10 cm is generally recommended unless the product label states otherwise.
  • Do not use a candle if its glass container is cracked, chipped or otherwise damaged.

While burning

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.
  • Do not burn a candle for longer than four hours at a time.
  • Keep the wax pool clear of matches, wick trimmings and other debris.
  • Never touch or move a candle while it is burning or while the wax is liquid.
  • The glass and surrounding surface may become hot during use.
  • Do not allow the flame to touch the side of the container.
  • If the flame becomes unusually high, flickers persistently or produces visible soot, extinguish the candle, allow it to cool and trim the wick before relighting.
  • Never use water to extinguish a candle.

Extinguishing and relighting

Use a candle snuffer where possible and ensure that the flame is completely extinguished.

Allow the candle, container and wax to cool fully before touching, moving or relighting it.

Trim the wick to approximately 5 mm before lighting the candle again.

When to stop using the candle

Stop burning the candle when approximately 10 mm of wax remains at the bottom of the container.

Continuing to burn a candle below this level can cause the base and container to become excessively hot.
